Support women in the justice system by creating transitional housing

The housing crisis is hitting these women hard. When they are released from prison, the lack of safe housing exposes them to major risks. For them, a roof over their heads is not just a place to live: it is protection, a new start, a chance to take back control of their lives.  

Thérèse Casgrain Equality Award

On March 24, Ruth Gagnon, renowned criminologist and executive director of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Quebec from 2004 to 2024, was awarded the Thérèse-Casgrain Equality Award in the Tribute category by Martine Biron, Minister of International Relations and La Francophonie and Minister responsible for the Status of Women. Quebec is facing an unprecedented housing crisis. Homelessness is on the rise, and the particularities of women's homelessness can no longer be ignored. For women in the justice system, the risks of homelessness are exponential. Prison exacerbates their poverty and makes them even more precarious.
