In Montreal, Thérèse-Casgrain House

The Thérèse-Casgrain House is a community residential facility (CRF), more commonly referred to as a halfway house. It is operated by the Elizabeth Fry Society of Quebec (SEFQ).

Since 1980, the Thérèse-Casgrain House has been helping people incarcerated in women's institutions. It welcomes women and gender-diverse people whose stay can range from a few weeks to several years. The length of their stay is determined by the length of their sentence.

Located in a residential area of Montreal's Notre-Dame-de-Grâce (NDG) district, it is close to many services such as shops and public transport.

The house can accommodate up to forty people. Each year, it accommodates around 100 women, all of whom are in the process of social reintegration.

Residents may come from a provincial detention facility, such as Établissement Leclerc de Laval, or from a federal penitentiary, such as Joliette Institution. The Thérèse-Casgrain House can also receive women from other provinces. Women may be referred by probation officers (provincial correctional service) or by parole officers (federal correctional services).

Individualized, supportive guidance

The Thérèse-Casgrain House offers support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, thanks to a team of support workers and clinical counselors.

The team is made up of a clinical director, three clinical counselors and a dozen support workers who are on call during the day, evening and night, on weekdays and weekends.

The support offered goes beyond the legal framework in order to allow residents to undertake multiple steps related to their social reintegration.
