The Elizabeth Fry Society of Quebec and advocacy
As a member of the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies (CAEFS), the Elizabeth Fry Society of Quebec monitors incarceration conditions and respect for the rights of federally sentenced women in the Quebec region. Because of their minority status in the penal system, federally incarcerated women benefit from the advocacy services of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Quebec and its national association, in addition to the services provided by the Office of the Correctional Investigator.
For the SEFQ, advocacy is based on the notion that women are in a better position to identify the elements they need for their healing and successful reintegration. The SEFQ has been visiting and answering calls from women in Joliette Institution since its opening. The team provides support and a listening ear to those incarcerated. Over the years, the SEFQ has developed an in-depth knowledge of these issues.
